Status effects are temporary buffs or debuffs. Currently, there are only debuffs, with all of them being applied by the enviroment. You cannot see the status effects that you currently have unless you enable overhead GUI in the settings, which will then show all your status effects underneath your health bar.
There are status effects that will cancel each other out. Namely, the cold and heat related status effects.
